Never Miss a Workability Post

Workability

August 23, 2022

Our idea for this week's newsletter is so simple it almost seems too obvious to write about.  However, we see over and over again the problems people create for themselves, their companies, and their relationships by not abiding by a simple piece of wisdom that was perhaps most memorably shared by Bill Murray in Groundhog Day.

"Don't drive angry"

Our emotional state has a tremendous impact on the decisions we make.  This is the point too obvious to write about.  But very few people take the time to implement this wisdom.  Do you have the patience to stop, slow down, listen, and attend to your internal emotional environment before taking action?  It can be the difference between discord and agreement, disaster and ease, simplicity and complication.  Our emotions color our perception of reality. If we lose sight of this simple fact we are more likely to act rashly and with insufficient information.

Growing up, most of us were not encouraged to feel or express our emotions.  Re-developing a sensitivity to your inner emotional world takes time, diligence, and dedication.  We were admonished when we “let it all out” while at the same time we were encouraged not to “bottle it all up.”  A bit of a mixed message, don’t you think?? To allow our emotions, we need to be able to recognize them and experience them free of judgment.  (Feeling/experiencing them does not mean that we express them).

So what do we do now?

Step 1: Become more sensitive to your emotional states to more quickly recognize them.

Step 2: Create the space for yourself to slow down and tell the truth about what you are experiencing..  (That doesn’t mean you need to say it out loud.)

Step 3: Steadily increase your tolerance to feeling what you feel when you feel it, without judgment.

This will arm you with some of the best qualities to have in life: resiliency, stability, integrity, fortitude, wisdom, clarity…just to name a few.

Steps 1-3 are at the core of our work.  If you are interested in learning more about it, please reach out to us.
