There's a popular meme: Sometimes I wrestle with my demons. Sometimes we just snuggle.
It’s the push and pull between these two poles that makes life interesting. When we wrestle our demons, it is like sending them to the gym to get stronger. Each time we grab the monster's hand for an arm wrestle, his muscles grow. We think we are fighting but really we are feeding.
The last thing we want to do is crawl into bed and hug that grotesque looking monster. But, if we have the courage to do it, to open our hearts and be accepting, the monster begins to change. And, soon you are snuggled up to something beautiful: YOU.
Demons are just aspects of ourselves that we have not yet accepted. We feel shame and disgust about these parts. But the shame and disgust is what makes them grow in their ugliness. Learning how to take the hand of your demons is how we integrate ourselves and become stronger and more able to produce the life we want. Imagine a life where you had no demons. Imagine the energy you would have.
It starts with acceptance.
To snuggly, cute demons.
